Annual Manual Success

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Don Diego and his posseThe Santa Fe Reporter publishes a large glossy Annual Manual around this time of year - giving locals and visitors lots of useful information and insight into Santa Fe.

And this year, they used 2 of my photos in the publication.

They (very cleverly) organized a photo contest asking for shots of real life in Santa Fe, and chose the best ones to illustrate the Manual.

The runners up (like me) get exposure, and the one top winner gets that and a nice prize, too.

Three site and a vacation

folkart market websiteMay already? I wanted to cover for how quiet it’s been recently on this site by explaining some of what I’ve been up to.

Planning and building sites, mainly. And then taking a much-needed but not actually that restful trip to Ireland and Italy. I’ll post on each of the new sites in more detail soon, but here’s the concise version of the site launches.

What it says on the tin. Artists’ profiles, lots of information and great photos for the biggest Folk Art Market in the US.

We’re Hiring - do you know your CSS from your elbow?

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

As the lack of posts here indicates - January has been very busy here in MC towers. So busy that we’re looking for help:

We’re looking for a web developer to help with production on a range of client projects.

Work is by contract on a project-by-project basis, but ideally this could work out as a long-term arrangement. You’d work at your place, but come into the office (downtown) for meetings every so often (if you live in Santa Fe). If you’re a great candidate but live in Ballygobackwards or somewhere even more exotic, let me know and we’ll see if we can do some telecommuting magic).

Most of the work would be building pages on new sites and making changes to existing client sites. At least initially, attention to detail and HTML knowledge are more important than design flair - although if you’re a great designer too, that would be great.

You need to be:

Duckbell.com - my new photography blog

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

image

I’ve just launched Duckbell.com - my new blog aimed at serious amateur photographers.

As photography becomes a more important part of my business (and my out-of-hours life), I thought there was a need for a photography blog that gathered the best news around the web, and added well-written tutorials and analysis.

It’s nice to have a project of my own to work on going into the new year, and it allows me try out some approaches and techniques that will benefit my clients too.

If you’re interested in photography, please check it out. And if you know someone who just got a digital camera for Christmas, please send them along too.

Happy Holidays from Moore Consulting

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Snow angel
Wow, that was fast. 2007 is nearly in the books, and it’s time to wish all my clients and friends a happy and peaceful holiday period.

The office will be closed from this Friday (Dec 21st) until Wednesday January 2nd. I’ll be checking email sporadically, though, so if you really need to get hold of me, that’s the best way.

And, continuing the tradition of making a charitable donation instead of sending out holiday cards to clients, suppliers and the like, this year’s recipients are Kitchen Angels.

Finally, the photograph shows our own angel - Fionnuala Moore - enjoying the snow.

mi casa home page

As the cold weather grips much of the northern hemisphere, you might well be thinking of life in warmer climes. In which case, our latest project might be just for you.

We’ve just launched the site for travel firm Mi Casa In Mexico, who run real estate tours to Mexico.

Describing themselves as “a neutral, objective, real estate and lifestyle information service”, the information and insight you gain on their tours give you a real headstart if you’re thinking of a full-time move or the purchase of a second home.

Helvetica - the movie

Monday, December 03, 2007

helvetica

I watched Helvetica last night. Watching a movie about a typeface marks me out as a consummate geek, but it was a great documentary.

By giving lots of information about Helvetica’s development and usage, it ends up as informal history of design over the last 50 years.

Great clips from graphic designers and type designers keep things moving along, and one of the things that struck me was how different American designers use of the font was from European use.

So far from being a fascistic typeface forcing conformity on us all (as the boomer-era designers insisted), it has within it the capability to create very different moods and impressions.

Lots of Apple gear on view in the designers’ studios of course, and I really want a Freitag bag now (made from recycled truck tarpaulins and used seat belts). With some Helvetica on it, of course.

Article in print edition of JPG Mag

Published in JPG magazineAn article of mine is featured in the latest print edition of the photography magazine, JPG, that’s just arrived in my mailbox.

The article - called ‘Prime Suspect’ - is a hymn of praise to the cheap and cheerful Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens. They included three of my photographs to accompany the article.

JPG is a high quality print magazine available throughout the US, that has over 100,000 members contributing articles and photographs to its website. Members vote on the things they like, but an editorial panel makes the final print version.

So I’m well chuffed to have made it in. Especially as this combination of photography, journalism and the Web is an area I’m going to explore in more depth in my own big project in the New Year. More on that later, but for now, feel free to rush out and buy a copy of the mag.

Moore Consulting offers new Hosting service

Sunday, November 25, 2007

I’m delighted to announce a new service offering from Moore Consulting - web hosting.

I was becoming increasingly unhappy with my old host’s erratic ways, and also finding that dealing with a range of different hosts for clients time-consuming and unsatisfactory.

Clients would pay for their hosting, but then also have to pay for my time to fix problems and chase down answers from less than responsive support staff, or struggle through a complicated control panel to do something simple..

Or I’d find clients just paying way too much for mediocre service - Network Solutions, I’m looking at you.

The solution - do it yourself

So I’m now offering a solution - hosting with Moore Consulting.
