Our Approach
How we do things is important as what we do. A successful site is the product of a professional process, as well as creative solutions. We are committed to professionalism and openness in all our dealings.
Communication is key
We work on the basis that people are coming to your site looking for information, not to marvel at the graphics or technical infrastructure that supports that information. Getting the graphics and technology right is important, of course, but the key focus should be on three things:
- what are your objectives for the site?
- who are your audience, and what are they looking for?
- how can you satisfy your organization's objectives and your audience needs in the clearest and most effective way?
Standards-based, usable and accessible
This user-centered approach leads naturally to a concern for web-standards, usability and accessibility for people with disabilities. We mostly build sites using XHTML and CSS for positioning and formatting (although we've found a combination of simple tabling and Transitional XHTML also works well). If you don't know what any of that means, don't worry - it translates into sites that work well in all browsers, and are easy to maintain and modify. It also gives us a headstart in making sites accessible.
Detailed quotes
We charge by the hour for all our services, and will always submit a written proposal including a breakdown of the stages of the work. If we can't know how much a later stage will cost (because the scope of the project has not been established yet, for example), we'll tell you, and give you an estimate based on similar sites.
Clear sign-offs
In a multi-stage project, we create clean review and sign-off at the end of each stage. This gives you the chance to approve the work so far and makes sure there are no nasty surprises later on. (It also protects us (and the clients themselves) from clients who want to keep making changes up to the last minute, creating delays and reducing quality.)
Web-based project management tools
We use Basecamp, the excellent web-based project management program from usability experts 37 signals. This creates a central store of project-related information, files, schedules and decisions. Clients can access the site at any time to check on project progress, sign off on stages or communicate with the project team. No more confusion over what was due when, or what the final version of any content or design should be. This means there's more chance a quality product will be delivered on time and to budget.
